• THE MAGIC LANTERNS: In the beginning, a magic lantern was a clumsy machine projecting hazy images onto the nearest wall. But to an audience amused easily by finger silhouettes in front of candles, it was giant progress. Today that kind of magic lantern would be laughed upon by super-sophisticated moviegoers drenched in wide-screen, stereophonic pictures and sounds. Yet throughout Europe, theatre audiences in their thousands turn out and scream ecstatic appreciation to the new attraction of the Sixties—The Magic Lanterns singing group from Warrington, near Manchester, England. These five young lads from Lancashire have combined the compelling attraction of those first magic lantern shows with the super-sophisticated full-width harmony vocal style of the Sixties in a magical musical act enjoyed already in Europe and about to storm the United States. The key that opened the floodgates of the talent of Jimmy Bilsbury (piano, vocals); "Bcv" Beveridge (guitar, vocals); Mike "Oz" Osborne (bass guitar, vocals); Peter Garner (guitar, vocals); and Harry Paul Ward (drums, vocals), was a song called Shame Shame, one of America's big chartbusters of 1968. Any one of the twelve tracks contained on this debut album produced by Steve Rowland would make a single in its own right —that's how strong the talent of The Magic Lanterns is in '69 and will continue to be.
