Them, Them Belfast Gypsies, The Freaks Of Nature и The Belfast Gypsies.
В 1967 году Эллиот оставил Them, а квартет выдал психоделичный альбом «Time Out, Time In For Them».

Them were a formidable, popular group in their own right

before singer Van Morrison went on to even greater fame.
This Belfast five only produced two LPs and a potful of 7" singles during its ascendance in the molten heat of the British Invasion. But they did manage two Top 40 hits in America in 1965 (the enduring number 24 "Here Comes the Night," later covered glam-style by David Bowie on Pin Ups, and number 33 "Mystic Eyes") and two Top Ten hits that same year in their native Britain ("Here Comes the Night" and a cover of Joe Williams' "Baby Please Don't Go").
And is there a single bar band in America that doesn't play "Gloria," shouting "G-L-O-R-I-A" just like the 19-year-old Morrison in 1964? Moreover, the group's West Coast U.S. tour of arenas like the Fillmore in the spring of 1966 had the Ulster youths commanding bills that included such admiring support groups as the Doors, Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band, the Grass Roots, and the Association.
At one of them, Frank Zappa even joined them on-stage. Clearly, Them's tough, heavily American blues captivated, a direct result of the vicious voice of Morrison. It was even more a weapon on this tougher-sounding material than it's been since he became a solo star.
Although the band chose songs to cover by John Lee Hooker, Jimmy Reed (twice), T-Bone Walker, Ray Charles, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, and Fats Domino, as seen here (as well as others by Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, and Bobby Troup), the real precedent for the white-hot, gnashing growl in Morrison's teenage voice was Howlin' Wolf. Here's a red-throated snarl not even other great '60s English white soul singers -- such as the Small Faces' Steve Marriott or the singer for the Action -- could match, one even more unsettling than the Animals' Eric Burdon.
Talk about making the hairs on your neck stand up! It's actually a pity, then, that Them relied so heavily on others' material (as did everyone else circa 1964), for the two dozen originals stand up well.
In addition to "Gloria," Morrison was well on the road to his later genius when he penned "Could You, Would You" and "Hey Girl."
True, his material could stand to rock & roll more, just as the Yardbirds held fast to Chicago blues but made their beat stomp.
But still he comes on like some swamp-dwelling, moonshine-drinking, big man on the prowl. Them were raw and ready, and digitally brought back kicking and screaming from the original analogue master tapes, they are an eerie thing of bluesy beauty.                  ~ by Jack Rabid

  • PRODUCERS NOTE
I (we) have obviously tried to gather together as many true stereo mixes as possible for this compilation, while staying clear of what was then called ''Electronic Stereo" (or pseudo stereo in the USA) but in a number of cases either the stereo mix did not exist or the existing mono version was better quality. The opening track is a case in point where the original mono mix was chosen.
The majority of first generation master mixes came from the vaults at Decca studios in London, but a great source of clean stereo mixes was found by Bill Levenson in New York. These were assembled at Mediasound
studios in December 1972 and were probably remixed there at the time from 4-traek tapes.
Times Getting Tougher1, 'Stormy Monday' and 'Friday's Child' only seem to exist in Electronic Stereo. Tracks 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24 are mono on CD 1, as are all the tracks on CD 2 except 2. 3, 23 and the above mentioned 15. 16 and 17.
For the interest of audiophiles, much can now be done to enhance and repair the sonic quality of tapes with P.C. based digital tools. For example, the piano introduction to 'Route 66' was originally recorded with distortion but is now almost clean, and the introductions to 'Bring 'em On In' and 'Richard Cory' are now clear of the loud tape and amplifier hiss that spoiled previous releases.

CHISWICK RECORDS was the first of the new wave of British independent labels that have so successfully challenged the monopoly of the major record cos. over the last few years and helped change the face of the record business so radically. Started in 1975, two years before the punk explosion, CHISWICK was originally conceived as an oldies label and was launched with a 4 track E.P. of hot & sweaty 60's ' style R&B from the Count Bishops. Without actually setting the charts alight in many ways it did have a profound effect on the 'do it yourself attitude that developed over the next 18 months, spawning a host of independent labels and the back to basics approach of the punk movement. In early 76 followed the second release in the shape of the genuine 50s rock & roll reissue "Brand New Cadillac" by Vince Taylor. This was subsequently covered by The Clash in 1980 and coincidentaily the third CHISWICK single "Keys To Your Heart" featured the vinyl debut of mr. Joe Strummer fronting The 101ers, one of the bands who bridged the gap between the 'pub rock' scene & the impending new wave outburst. Though frequently regarded as a punk/new wave label CHISWICK'S output has consistently covered a wide range of musical styles, as evidenced by the album you are now holding. The first CHISWICK chart success was in fact Motorhead pre-empting the current heavy metal revival by three years. Radio Stars produced the second U.K. chart success with 'Nervous Wreck', unashamed 'power pop' before it was invented. Rocky Sharpe & The Replays provided the first international success with Rama Lama Ding Dong', a great piece of nonsense rock & roll doo wop and Sniff 'N'The Tears went one stage further providing the first CHISWICK U.S. top twenty hit with 'Drivers Seat'.
And so to the present day when the record business is suffering the worst recession in years & CHISWICK have just signed two exciting new acts in the shape of Tony Koklin, with his 'off the wall' pop & Albania and their 'new musik with roots' - original to say the least. If you have bought CHISWICK records in the past then you may think you know what to expect, buy "BUY CHISWICK RECORDS" and be surprised. If you have never heard of CHISWICK records then buy "BUY CHISWICK RECORDS" and be even more surprised - cheap at twice the price.

Chiswick Records.
(The Beatles, The Rolling Stones) и гаражную (The Standells, The Strangeloves).
В 1978 году два сингла («I Take What I Want» и «I Want Candy») привели Count Bishops в телепрограмму Top of the Pops.

Biography (allmusic.com)
Although amounting to little more than a footnote in the early days of English punk rock, the Count Bishops were a fine, energetic, R&B-based band capable of kicking out a fierce racket of noise that sounded like a grimier version of seminal British R&B revivalists Dr. Feelgood. Originally fronted by journeyman American singer Mike Spencer, the Count Bishops' 1975 debut EP, Speedball, released on Ted Carroll's wonderful Chiswick Records, was a straight-ahead slice of R&B that featured the spooky, exhilarating "Train, Train." Surprisingly, the band unceremoniously dumped Spencer and recorded their self-titled debut with fellow Englishman Dave Tice, who had a voice so gruff it sounded as though he gargled with ground glass. A ripsnorting live record followed (by this time they had dropped "Count" from their name), but it was clear that the band was simply treading water. By 1979, the thoroughly mediocre Cross Cuts was released to public apathy, guitarist Zenon de Fleur was killed in a car wreck, and lead guitarist Johnny Guitar hooked up with Dr. Feelgood. The Bishops called it a career.   - John Dougan

     Chiswick Records SW1 EP

The Bishops are exactly the sort of band we were looking for when we started this label. They have the raw energy and excitement which has been missing from so much of todays music. I'm still amazed when I think of the 5 hour session at Pathway when the band laid down 13 fantastic trax, 4 of which are included here. After listening to this E.P. I'm sure you'll agree with me that as long as there are Bands like the COUNT BISHOPS around the future of rock'N'roll is Secure.
