• Jim (Jimbo) Bowling and I shared an apartment in Hampton, VA (Sinclair Gardens) back in the early 70s. Jim and I had been friends since our sophomore year in High School and he became my first informal guitar teacher. This was in the early days when Snuff was first formed as an Acoustic Trio with Mike Jones, Bill Wampler and Jim (now deceased, God bless him!) singing intricate three part harmonies. We were all great friends and I heard some unforgettable music being made. It may be lost to time but not forgotten. I worked and traveled (Caffe Lena – Saratoga, NY) with Snuff for the next two years. They became a success throughout the East Coast with a full electric/acoustic sound. The band evolved with Jim and Bill on vocal and guitars, Mike on vocals and then Robbie of “Robbie and Coyote" on guitars and vocals. Chuck "Coyote" Larson joined later replacing Bill on guitar and vocals. C. Scott Trabue, who had played in the rock band, "Hunger" with Jim and Bill, played the bass. Cecil Hooker, a brilliant violinist, was added and percussionist Michael A. Johnson rounded out the group with his fourth vocal part and brilliant lyrical drumming. While I was working and living in New York, I caught them several times at the "Lone Star Cafe", once with "Willie" sitting in. The group recorded both albums in Richmond, VA where they were also a local club favorite. They were a big hit in Washington, DC, playing the Birchmere and others. A major highlight of those days was an invitation to visit the Ford White House with photos by David Hume Kennerly - Pulitzer Prize Winning Photographer. Snuff traveled extensively (West Coast as well) as a main act, opened for, and remained good friends, with many prominent musicians. Notably, Jimmy Buffet's Coral Reefer Band, Poco, The Willie Nelson Band and The Allman Brothers Band. Norman Harrell took Robbie's place when he and Mike Jones left to form Street Talk. As a writing member from 1978-2000, two of his songs and two of Chuck's got Snuff the Curb record deal. Currently, Robbie, Chuck and Norman perform as Snuff on a regular basis.
