• During the 60s Gordon Lightfoot had seen success in his native Canada, but had not managed to make it into the US charts as a recording artist. Dissatisfied, he moved from United Artists to Reprise Records. Here he recorded the album Sit Down Young Stranger, which was released in 1970. It was an excellent album, certainly his best yet, and a promising start with his new label. Instrumental backing featured familiar associates Red Shea (guitar) and Rick Hayes (bass), plus some new friends including Ry Cooder, Van Dyke Parks, John Sebastian and Randy Newman. The album featured one cover - Kris Kristofferson's "Me & Bobby McGee" (apparently the second ever version of this soon to be oft-covered song).
It originally didn't sell well, but before long the song "If You Could Read My Mind" became a hit. It not only got to #1 in Canada, but made it to #5 in the US, and later in the year #30 in the UK. It thus became the breakthrough Lightfoot had been waiting for, and remains today his best known and most played song. Following its success the album was retitled If You Could Read My Mind and got to #12.
