• Альбом "Book of the Dead" в оригинале был спродюсирован самим Ридом, создан в конце 80-х в соавторстве с James Stamp (известен по "Third World War") и затем переиздан в 1998 г. • Открывающий трек "Un-Holy" кажется загадочной интроспективной частью альбома, основаный на стоне гитары в фоновом режиме. Некоторые слушатели могут увязнуть в текстах песен, наполненных образами черной магии, но при ближайшем прослушивании в кое-каких треках можно найти довольно острые социальные комментарии. При этом в альбоме нет заметных рифм или причин для дословного понимания смысла "Love Kills", но образы, которые вызывают слова Рида вместе с сопровождающими их гитарными эффектами в стиле Pink Floyd, создают внешний эффект, окутанный тайной и оставляющий слушателей в изумлении. Всё это вместе, однако, выглядит весьма причудливо, почти как рок-опера.
• Трек "Evil To The Core" словно предназначен для саундтрека к фильму ужасов. Уже одной крутой ридовской английской бравады достаточно, чтобы привлечь слушателя, но при всей причудливости музыки надо обратить пристальное внимание и на взаимодействие вокала и клавишных - оно воистину подкупает. "Dance of the Sun Cult" с некоторым намёком на стилистику Rolling Stones - словно бальзам для души. Вокал Рида не столь привлекателен, как у Мика Джаггера, но мелодия сама по себе хороша. Конечно, это не совсем то, что можно сравнить со Stones или Beatles, но это лучше, чем большая часть из того, что вы, вероятно, слышали сегодня.

За ним следуют "La Punka Morbide", имеющая некоторые параллели с "Evil To The Core", а затем - "Dark Ride", возвращающая нас к берегам Миссисиппи.
PS: К сожалению, Darryl Read трагически погиб в воскресенье 23 июня 2013 г. в автокатастрофе в Паттае (Таиланд).

• If ever there was a rock n’ roll Renaissance man, Darryl Read would be him. Actor. Singer. Songwriter. Music and theatrical producer. Poet. Although he’s never won as much acclaim as some of his contemporaries -- Mike Jagger, Robert Daltry and John Lennon, to name a few -- his work has resonated throughout the artistic world for nearly five decades. Book of the Dead, originally produced by Read and co-written by Terrence James Stamp (of ‘Third World War’ fame) in the late 1980s and then re-issued in 1998, is a masterfully crafted representation of the 1960s-style goth rock that has punctuated much of Read’s illustrious musical career.
• Spoken word pieces start and finish the CD, which gives Book of the Dead a real sense of completeness, but other than their strategic places they’re great works that put the spotlight on Read’s poetical skills. The opener “Un-Holy” is a cryptic introspective piece that is set to moaning guitars set in the background. Some might get caught up in the black magic imagery of his words, but upon closer listen, you will find some fairly poignant social commentary laced in there. There’s no discernable rhyme or reason to the closer “Love Kills”, but the imagery that Read’s words evokes along with the Pink Floyd-like guitar effects in the back, make for an ethereal experience that leaves Read shrouded in mystery and listeners in wonderment.
• Everything in between, though, is whimsical, opera-rock fun. “Evil ToThe Core” should have been included on the Rocky Horror Picture Show’s soundtrack. Read’s cool, English bravado is enough to draw you, but the delicious quirkiness of the music – pay close attention to the relationship between Read’s voice and the keyboards -- is captivating.
• “Dance of the Sun Cult” oozes with Rolling Stones-like soul. Read’s voice doesn’t have quite the same polish as that of Mick Jagger, but you’ve got to love the melody of the music itself. It’s not quite on par with the Stones or the Beatles, but it’s better than most anything you’re likely to hear today. “The Devil In Black Leather” is another song that fuses rock n’ roll with the blues, although, this time Read’s closer to the Mississippi Delta on this one. The slide guitar is straight out of the Bo Diddley textbook
• The title track was a little disappointing. It’s an okay song with decent melodies, but I was expecting something a little darker and more ethereal. Read more than makes up for it on the tracks that follow though. “La Punka Morbide” features some more of that ‘British-cool-guy-swagger’ that’s heard on “Evil To The Core” and “Dark Ride” takes us back to the banks of Ole Miss. Book of the Dead is a great CD. Those wanting to experience Darryl Read for the first time should buy it. ~ Eric V. White
