• Cast your mind back to the closing years of the 1970s, when girls were girlie and guys wore trousers so tight, little was left to the imagination! If you were a teenage girl in those days, then you probably bought one or more of the many weekly teen magazines that lined the shelves of every newsagent in Britain. If so, then you would have found gazing from the pages, four of the most gorgeous guys around, Tim Atack, Graham Bilbrough, Keith Atack and Mike McKenzie…….better known as CHILD. In the beginning there was Tim. Tim played the drums from a very early age. One day when he was about 12 years old, Tim and his friend Graham, who played guitar and sang rather well, decided to form a band. Soon a friend of Graham’s who played guitar joined them and then of course came Tim’s multi talented brother Keith. The years past by and a lot of hard work and dedication was put in by the guys. They were doing lots of gigs in their native Yorkshire. They were writing their own material, perfecting their playing and acquiring a thriving following of adoring fans! When they left school they decided to turn professional and hooked up with manager Mike Devere. Early in 1978 a defining event occurred. David Cooper left the band to be replaced by Mike on bass guitar and the line up which we all know and love was born. This was quickly followed by a record deal being clinched and their first single When You Walk In The Room was released. It made it into the UK Top 40. The follow up single It’s Only Make Believe reached number 10 and earned the guys a silver disc. During the height of their success Child appeared on many TV shows including; Seaside Special, The Basil Brush Show, Jim’ll Fix It, Multicoloured Swap-Shop, Tizwas, Saturday Banana, Lyn’s Look-In and of course Top Of The Pops. Further singles followed including the rousing Only You and the beautiful Still The One. The guys also recorded two albums CHILD - The First Album and Total Recall, the former earning them another silver disc. In 1979 the band received the great honour of being appointed Official Ambassadors to the UK fund-raising branch of the United Nations, as the year was designated International Year Of The Child.
