Charlie "I Need Your Love". Программу нового альбома "Lines" обкатывали в турах со Styx, BTO и Alice Cooper/The Kinks.

Charlie was a British rock band that was formed in 1971 by singer/songwriter Terry Thomas. The group was most active as a recording unit from the mid-1970s through 1986. Charlie never charted in their home country, but had four minor hits in the US: 1977's "Turning To You"; 1978's "She Loves to Be In Love"; 1979's "Killer Cut" and 1983's "It's Inevitable".
Allmusic / Biography by Heather Phares
The jazz-inflected, London-based group Charlie was as well known for the sexy babes on their album covers as they were for their close, smooth harmonies and slick, catchy singles like "Turning" and "Watching TV." The band's core lineup consisted of vocalist/guitarist Terry Thomas (who had also been in a band with Free and Bad Company's Simon Kirke), bassist/vocalist John Anderson (formerly of Axe), and drummer Steve Gadd, and a wide array of supporting players, including keyboardist Julian Colbeck, guitarist Martin Smith, auxiliary drummer Shep Lonsdale, and former Argent members Bob Henrit and John Verity. Their radio-friendly sound debuted in 1976 with Fantasy Girls and the group managed a steady stream of moderate FM hits in the U.S. and the U.K., including 1978's "Killer Cut" and "She Loves to Be in Love." However, Charlie's biggest success came with the 1983 hit "It's Inevitable," which received considerable airplay from MTV and was featured on their self-titled seventh album. Despite the added prominence this single and tours with the Doobie Brothers, Styx, BTO, and the Kinks brought them, the group remained primarily a cult favorite for their nearly decade-long career. Charlie's swan song came in with In Pursuit of Romance, which featured Thomas as the only original member.

At the time of recording we all still had 'proper' jobs and so had to take a weeks vacation for the recording. We turned up at the studio expecting to meet Roy Thomas Baker (Queen’s producer) who had been proposed as our producer. He was suddenly unavailable so we worked with 19 year old Mike Stone, who was Queen’s studio engineer. This was Mike’s first production and we had a lot of fun making this record.
The album was mixed in a week involving late, late nights. The album disappointed us sonically but it was a great experience to have recorded in the same studio that the Beatles, David Bowie, Elton John, and many others had used.

Original Release: Recorded / Mixed: Aug-Sept 1976 at Trident Studios, London UK. After the first album we looked to the US for a producer (Bill Szmczyk/Gary Katz) so we did 7 demos in a day to send out to them. They never got them - that would have involved parting with money so the production company informed us that Terry was the producer as he had done such a good job on the demos.
We started recording and after a week or so Martin Smith left to join another band. Julian Colbeck came in as a session player (first track he recorded was Turning To You) and we all got on so well that he was asked to join. We ended up using two of the demos on the album - Don't Look Back and Love Is Alright.

No Second Chance having achieved some success in the US the doors were thrown open. Charlie was to make only the second 48-track recording ever. Trident were now at the cutting edge of recording technology having installed the Studer synchronization unit that allowed two 24 track machines to be run together.
In reality it was a nightmare - it took 30 seconds to synchronize and very often failed - usually at 2 AM when there was no one around to fix it. The Charlie sound evolved with all these tracks available with lots more vocals.
Memories: mixing 48 tracks without today’s automation meant three people on the front console and three people on the rear console. We rehearsed the mix everybody had their moves then we did it. If anybody made a mistake - start again!! During one such giant mix session, the assistant engineer assigned to the 1/4” master failed to spot that tape had been, with each new mix, building up beyond the confines of tape spool. Eventually, ‘uncontained’ tape had blossomed out a couple inches and then simply exploded, raining thousands of feet of shredded tape all over the studio. Dead silence was followed by tears and a swift exit by the assistant. Then we started all over again. Again.

Lines had broadened our US profile and this was the album to take us to the top. Our caring managers (and Trident Studios owners) decided that to give us the best chance of success we should record from midnight to midday - the graveyard shift. At this time we were being sued by our previous managers so having finishes a session at midday we then had to sit with lawyers for 2 hours to prepare our case. We then got home about 4 PM - had something to eat and then tried to get some sleep before getting up at 1030 PM to get to the studio - most conducive to creativity. The songs were more expansive than before with a full string arrangement for Too Late and some exciting brass arrangements on The End Of It All.
Memories: Terry putting Steve Gadd in the corridor to add tambourine to a song and changing the speed of the tape up and down and listening to him cursing. Watching the cream of British brass players unable to play the complex arrangements put before them and then blaming the studio monitors for being too bright. Eating Indian food, almost permanently, and at an hour when most sensible people were eating cornflakes. Meeting the new Charlie (cover) girl after an exhaustive nationwide contest in the US. She was NOT the girl that looked in any way like the girl whose photo we picked out but we were too gentlemanly (or simply too gobsmacked) to find out how this happened or who the girl we were now confronted with actually was.
