Alex Harvey's Soul Band was the debut album by Alex Harvey And His Soul Band. 

It was originally released in 1964. his the first original LP by Alex Harvey. Do not be confused with the german compilation released in 1999 under the same name, but with completely different tracks. ( re-released on CD in Germany in 1999)

My first meeting with Alex Harvey was due . . . was due, in fact, to a telephone call at throo a.m. on October 13th, 1963, to be quite exact (and I always try to be). The manager of one of Hamburg's leading twisteries was on the blower, and informed me at this dreaded hour that I should come to his club immediately and get a load of "the most fantastic sound since sliced bread". Although his claim sounded rather stale, it occurred to me that maybe, on this occasion, (for there HAD been others) he might possibly be right. So I said "OK, I'll come", scrambled into my nitelife clothes, hailed a passing bicycle and headed hotfoot for the Reeperbahn, Hamburg's world-famous Rue de Plaisir. Upon arriving at the club I was greeted enthusiastically by the said manager who hauled me inside, gave me a soft drink with a hard filling, and a ringside seat at the twisting turmoil. For about ten minutes I listened to the music whilst secretly memorizing the new nifty twisted variations that were being ground out all around me. The band stopped, the twisting stopped and there was a short interval. Then Mr. Alex Harvey and his Soul Band was announced. There was an expectant silence into which, as all war correspondents always say about the beginning of a battle, all hell broke loose (and who says there is NO similarity between the dance floor of a twistery and a battlefield?). I watched and listened to the music completely knocked out by the sheer OOMPH of the Harvey outfit. Indeed, his performance on stage has to be seen to be believed. In my mind, I had already signed Harvey after eight minutes of hearing his kind of music. Then came an interval, Harvey came to me, and we both came to an agreement. The result is this LP, /ecorded on the spot in that nitery.
That was the introductory story based on an original telephone call. Now come the facts 6f Alex Harvey's life which are nothing but the truth.

• For his second album, Harvey eschewed the full R&B combo sound of his debut for a solo set of traditional blues, accompanied only by a couple of guitars. No one would mistake this for a hard-bitten set by a wizened Delta bluesman, but Harvey doesn't make an attempt to disguise the fact that he's a hard-living, life-loving Scotsman plunging full-tilt into the music he loves. As British trad blues efforts go, this is pretty good. Harvey attacks standards with a gusto that is wrenching and jolly (sometimes both at once) on this set of fairly raw performances.

First time on CD for the rocker's final (& rarest) album. Originally issued in 1983, Harvey died right after it's completion in 1982. Completed just a month before Alex Harvey's death in February 1982, Soldier on the Wall is generally regarded as little more than a career afterthought, the last sad recordings of a man whose golden years were now seven or eight years behind him. Part of that, of course, was due to the circumstances of its posthumous release, a barely publicized appearance on a tiny northern England indie label that went out of business within the year; but it also reflects upon the distinctly underwhelming nature of Harvey's own last two albums, the SAHB farewell Rock Drill, and the solo The Mafia Stole My Guitar.
Yet Soldier on the Wall is actually one of Harvey's most fulfilling albums ever. From the synth-packed romp of the opening "Mitzi," through to the closing reprise of the spellbinding title track, the somewhat low-budget feel of the record perfectly matches the deliciously downtrodden glamour of both its maker and its contents. The western lament of "Billy Bolero" and a rip-roaring take on Buddy Ebsen's "Snowshoes Thompson" are absolute stand-outs, while the mix of new material, oddball covers, and one Harvey oldie (the late-'60s "Roman Wall Blues" epic) have a dynamic sheen that catapults matters straight back to the glory days of the similarly-constituted Penthouse Tapes, the last truly great Harvey album, in 1975.
No bonus tracks round out the CD reissue, but the accompanying booklet includes a lengthy reflection on the album's making, disappearance, and, now, its return to the shelves. And, for that, we should all be truly thankful.

•  2009 two CD set. When someone says 'you had to be there', never was a truer word spoken than in the case of The Sensational Alex Harvey Band. As good as the studio albums were, they couldn't possibly compete with seeing the band live SAHB had only released one album, Framed, when they went into the BBC's Paris Theatre to record their first In Concert performance in 1972. This was the start of a series of recordings for the BBC radio and BBC television that captured the band at their very best. This set features unreleased versions of tracks from the peak of the band's success and includes an unreleased version of the hit single 'Delilah' alongside a storming cover of Sly Stone's 'Dance To The Music'. Universal.

It's probably accurate to claim that ROCK WORKSHOP couldn't exist today. Only during the early 70's did record labels bestow upon the flexibility and freedom that led to the creation of such original and often avant-garde albums. ROCK WORKSHOP were just such an innovative project. The band formed in 1971 when guitarist RAY RUSSELL (who had previously worked with GRORHIE FAME and the Blue Flames) colluded with the legendary singer ALEX HARVEY. Russell had first met Harvey after standing in for Harvey's brother Leslie (of Stone The Crows) in the musical 'Hair' (at a tender age). Their shared enthusiasm in producing more left-field material enabled them to recruit a sprawling band of 12 members that included a lively brass section. Their debut album 'Rock Workshop' was recorded over a two-day period in April 1970, and released soon afterwards, though it surprisingly failed to make any substantial impact on the charts. Containing such tracks as 'Hole In Her Stocking' and 'Born In The City' both delivered with ALEX HARVEY's hefty vocals and it remains fresh even today. Yet the record label was sufficiently impressed with the debut to fund a second album. Regrettably, by the time of the recording of the second album, ALEX HARVEY had effectively left the band in order to pursue his own career (wit the first of many Sensational Alex Harvey Band albums being released in 1972). Replacing Harvey were AL GREED (who had sung on a number of the songs on the first album) and the somewhat mysterious figure of GINGER who only worked with the band on this record. This release is enhanced by the inclusion of some previously unreleased material, which Russell had recently unearthed, that were recorded in the period between the first and second album. "Well, these are tracks that I didn't know that I had. I found the tapes, along with a few photos of Alex, in the bottom of a ox in my loft," he smiles "I'm actually amazed tht the tapes have survived so long as they were out in my barn for ages!" Including rehearsals (with Harvey on vocals) of tracks such as "Wade In The Water" and "Ice Cold" along with live material recorded at London's Goldsmiths College they provide a valuable insight into how the band arranged and performed their material in a live setting.

Группа играет преимущественно мощный и очень динамичный брасс-рок с небольшим уклоном в блюз и большим – в джаз, больше всего вызывая ассоциации с BS&T (особенно периода их второго альбома), но заходя и на территорию, близкую к Colosseum. Примерно половина времени звучания диска – инструментальные вещи, с хорошими длинными сольными партиями гитары, клавиш и духовых (а в Theme For Freedom главную роль исполняет барабанщик). Среди них отдельно стоит отметить 10-минутную He Looks At Me/Mooncross Grove, где первая часть представляет собой характерный для группы энергичный джаз-роковый коктейль с переходами от легких фортепианных променадов до жестких фузовых риффов, вторая же – приджазованный авант-прог с гитарными выкрутасами и вошедшей в раж духовой секцией, а на последней полуминуте композиция резко превращается в меланхоличный этюд, исполняемый на классической гитаре. В вокальных номерах некоторое сходство с Colosseum усиливается еще и за счет того, что неуравновешенная манера пения Алекса Харви довольно сильно напоминает Криса Фарлоу. В заключительной вещи альбома You To Lose Харви поет на пару с клавишником Аланом Гридом, и здесь собраны и закрученные гитарные запилы, и визжащая медь, и беспечная флейта, и стройные звуки скрипок, и электронные пульсации... В CD-переиздании к основному времени диска добавлено 6 бонусов, но 4 из них – альтернативные версии, не имеющие серьезного отличия от альбомных вариантов, а две последних композиции не несут в себе ничего принципиально нового по сравнению с уже прослушанным материалом.

A product of the early-70's, Rock Workshop were formed by Ray Russell and Alex Harvey and became an expansive band of thirteen musicians who created an innovative and technically articulate form of experimental rhythm and blues.
Ray Russell recalls that he was playing with Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames and then appeared in the 'Hair' musical together with Alex Harvey's brother Les. From this meeting, and Alex Harvey's involvement on backing vocals in the musical, the idea of Rock Workshop was born.
The collective's first album was issued in 1971 to great critical acclaim. However, due to their record company wanting to market them as an English 'Blood Sweat And Tears', they never achieved great commercial success. A second album was released before the band folded and Alex Harvey went on to great commercial and critical success with his own band.
This Angel Air CD features that first album together with bonus tracks. An informative CD booklet contains notes by Rich Wilson.

Although history records the last years before Alex Harvey formed his Sensational Alex Harvey Band as a confused period marked by mere passing fancies, none of which came to fruition until he linked with the similarly flailing Tear Gas, he was in fact already blueprinting much of what SAHB would soon be accomplishing via the academically named, but blues-wailing nevertheless Rock Workshop. Harvey appears on just four of the eight songs on its debut album, but the presence of both a couple of subsequently familiar songs and a vocal workout to rival anything on Framed or Next establish them among his finest performances. A savage rearrangement of the traditional "Wade in the Water" and his own (with fellow Workshop-per Ray Russell) "Hole in Her Stocking" are both bruising R&B stampers, punctured by howling horns and a guitar riff, in the first-named case, that could have escaped from "Walk Don't Run," Blood, Sweat & Tears-style. Harvey himself is in breathtaking form, utterly undistinguishable from the showman who brought listeners "Vambo," and the only regret is that he is confined to just the four songs -- the remainder of Rock Workshop, while certainly a blistering blur of hot and sweaty jazz-soul-boogie, also sinks into anonymity by comparison, just another white English fusion band honking and stomping around the room. Indeed, there are moments when the sound effects that open and link the songs are more interesting than the songs themselves. Nevertheless, Rock Workshop remains a key passage in Alex Harvey's career, all the more so in its 2002 CD incarnation, where the original LP is appended by half a dozen bonus tracks, including alternate takes of "Hole in Her Stocking" and "Born in the City," plus a couple of songs that didn't make the album itself. (Despite the track listing's claims to the contrary, incidentally, Harvey does not sing the prettily Traffic-like "Primrose Hill.")

Roman Wall Blues was an awkward though intermittently interesting effort that still found Harvey in the midst of his long, halting transition from soul-blues artist to a more original songwriter who fused satire and hard rock with R&B. Many of the arrangements have a dated horn-adorned soul-rock feel, and the trendy band-on-the-road hippie phraseology isn't as funny as it was probably intended to be. But there are some genuinely enjoyable tracks here and there, like the goofy minstrel folk-rock of "Broken Hearted Fairytale," the desultory lament "Maxine," and the uncommonly grim title track, where Harvey plays the part of an actual Roman soldier on patrol. And Harvey's vocals are never less than exuberant, in the manner of that hyperactive kid who's barely toned down even after reaching adulthood, particularly on the '50s rock & roll-style "Donna." Covering the Rolling Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash" was an utterly superfluous endeavor, however. It's among the rarest of Harvey's albums, and as a little-heard link in his evolution it deserves reissue, in spite of its inconsistency.
