In a year filled with great pop, 1982's 'If the Love Fits Wear It' by Leslie Pearl was certainly one of its most charming singles and her follow-up album 'Words & Music' wasn't too shabby either, but Leslie was more than just a flash in the pan having written songs for Karen Carpenter, Dr. Hook and Kenny Rogers, as well as dabbling in lucrative commercial jingle work. Going back a bit further to the wondrous year of 1977, Leslie Pearl and her sister Debbie released one album as Pearl and while it never moved mountains commercially, it remains a fun listen for pop fans of the era.
Leslie and Debbie both share vocal chores on the record but more the fool is me, as I can't tell the difference between the two! Yet, this was Leslie's show with all the tracks written by the more famous Pearl moving in unison with the popular sounds of the day that included Captain & Tennille, Melissa Manchester and MOR queen Helen Reddy. There's wonderful pop on display here including 'Love In Your Life' and the delightful 'It's All Gonna Come Back' which both hint at Leslie's 80's work. I must say, no one writes music like this anymore. Filled with innocence and the hope of new love, the music of Pearl sounds dated compared to the current hip hop reveal all-do me now pop tarts that have helped send the music industry in its disastrous downward spiral, but for the discerning listener these lovely ladies provide just over a half hour of good music well worth having in the collection.
Pearl has never been on CD and surprisingly to my knowledge neither has Leslie's 'Words & Music' album although the later does seem to be popular with west coast fans. Most are probably not aware of the Pearl album and hopefully of a few aficionados of that sound will find this review and help spread the word. (glorydazemusic)
