The Magic Lanterns - Lit Up - With The Magic Lanterns (1967)

Label: CBS Records

Format: Vinyl, LP, Album
Country: UK
Released: 1967
Genre: Pop Rock
Duration: 00:36:45

• The Magic Lanterns first lit up the London pop scene in the summer of swinging '66. Four young men from Lancashire with accents as ripe as Wensleydale cheese cut a record called "Excuse Me Baby", a jolly, "good time music" song complete with an antique, horned one-string violin. That record took the Magic Lanterns into the charts - glowing dimly in the nether regions rather than lighting them up like searchlights, but even so quite an achievement for an unknown group. "Rumplestiltskin" followed, using a home-made instrument, which firmly established their name as a group with a distinctive sound. And with the release of. "Knight In Rusty Armour" the Magic Lanterns were obviously here to stay. Then one frosty night in January four young men and one bowler-hatted producer called Mike Collier emerged exhausted but elated from a recording studio in Charing Cross Road. This LP - the first album by the Magic Lanterns - was in the can.- Rodney Burbeck.

Country: US
Genre: AOR, Pop Rock
Duration: 00:44:45

• Valentine's history goes back to late 60's Philadelphia and originally included one half of Hall & Oates - Jon Oates in its line-up. Evidently they were quite popular in the city of brotherly love and it didn't hurt lead vocalist Frank Stallone's brother Sylvester was a rising star by the time the groups only album hit the racks or did it? According to Stallone the band were ruined by its association with the film 'Rocky' and were seen as a manufactured entity, yet it didn't seem to affect Stallone's solo career as he was featured prominently on several 'Rocky' related soundtracks in the following years, but that's another story...

Hagood Hardy & The Montage - Montage (1972)

Artist: Hagood Hardy & The Montage
Album: Montage
Label: GRT Records
Catalog#: 9230-1012
Format: Vinyl, LP, Album
Country: Canada
Released: 1972
Genre: Rock, Pop, Vocal
Duration: 00:39:06

• Dreamy vocal pop from early 70s Canada -- a set that owes a lot to the 60s sweetness of Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66! The Montage have an approach that's a bit more rock-based overall, but there's definitely some Sergio-like touches in the music -- especially the way the two female vocalists sing together in a nicely spaced-out sort of sound -- warm, but with an undercurrent of coldness -- mixed in with some very groovy rhythms from Hagood Hardy on vibes, electric piano, marimba, and percussion! There's also a fair bit of bossa in the mix too -- not as overtly as on Brasil 66 records, and more filtered down into a 70s sort of hipness -- expanded out with wider pop influences, and some traces of Sunshine styles as well. Titles include great versions of "Cast Your Fate To The Wind", "Come Saturday Morning", "Baby I'm A Want You", "Guantanamera", "It's Too Late/I Feel The Grass Grow Under My Feet", and "If" -- and the record would be right at home on A&M! ~ Dusty Groove America.

 • Side One:
A1. Baby I'm A Want You - 04:20
A2. The Garden Path - 03:14
A3. How Insensitive - 03:32

The Highwaymen - One More Time! (1964)

Artist: The Highwaymen
Album: One More Time!
Label: United Artists Records
Catalog#: UAL 3323
Format: Vinyl, LP, Album
Released: 1964
Country: US
Genre: Folk, Folk Revival
Duration: 00:27:53

• The Highwaymen's next-to-last album for United Artists is notable for its version of Buffy Sainte-Marie's "Universal Soldier," which was released as a single two years before Donovan and Glen Campbell enjoyed modest success with the song. Aside from that bit of social consciousness, One More Time! is business as usual for The Highwaymen, with a mixture of traditional and ethnic songs well-played and well-sung. The Highwaymen and their commercial folk brethren were quickly becoming obsolete at this time, supplanted by political folk artists and, eventually, folk-rock. One More Time!, viewed in the context of the music of 1964, is harmless entertainment a couple of years out of step with the times. - Greg Adams
