Silverbird - Getting Together (1972 Columbia)

Artist: Silverbird
Album: Getting Together
Label: Columbia
Catalog#: KC 31570
Format: Vinyl, LP, Album
Country: US
Released: 1972
Genre: Rock, Pop Rock
Duration: 00:26:23

•  This album is dedicated to Ginger. Through the years, it has become established and realized that the longer a band sticks together, the tighter and more cohesive it becomes. After all, it makes sence. Practice, common experience and the unpredictable changes a group of people literally living together must go through make a tighter unit.
• So if a time-tested band is a tight unit, then a time-tested family is an even tighter one. Silverbird is a tightly knit band and an even more tightly knit family. Originally from New Mexico, Silverbird consists of brothers Gilbert, 15, Mark 17, and Perry, 16, along with nephew Rudy, 20, mother Virginia and father Reuben. As to the ages of Ma and Pa, Virginia told me to ask Reuben and Reuben told me to ask Virginia.
• Their music is based on harmonies that are bellringing and melodies that are so encompassing that a message, it's to tale a little off your back, remove a worry or two and maybe even add several smiles to your day. As far as I'm concerned, that's plenty. (back cover)

Buzz Clifford - See Your Way Clear (1969)

Artist: Buzz Clifford
Album: See Your Way Clear
Label: Dot Records
Catalog#: DLP 25965
Format: Vinyl, LP, Album
Country: US
Released: 1969
Genre: Rock, Blues Rock
Duration: 00:37:10

•  Frustrated with music, Clifford joined the National Guard. When his enlistment was up in 1964 he relocated to Los Angeles where he was hired by Hastings Music as a songwriting, placing material with the likes of Keith Barbour ('Echo Park') Petula Clark, Kris Kristofferson, and Leon Russell.
• So jump ahead to 1968 when he was brought into the band Hamilton Streetcar as a replacement for guitarist Michael Georgiades. The Streetcar managed to record one interesting pop-psych LP before calling it quits at which time Clifford decided to resurrect his solo career. On the strength of his Streetcar credentials and his songwriting successes (notably Keith Babour's 1969 hit with 'Echo Park'), he was signed as a solo act by Dot (which had coincidently been Hamilton Streetcar's label),. The resulting album 1969's "See Your Way Clear" was produced by former Challengers drummer Richard Delvy (who had also produced the Hamilton Streetcar album). The collection teamed Clifford with an extensive collection of friends, including members of Colours (Jack Dalton, Robbie Edwards, and Gary Montgomery), The East Street Kids (David Doud, Mark Doud and David Potter), and Moon members David Jackson and David Marks. With Clifford responsible for penning nine of the eleven tracks, musically the album was quite diverse including stabs at country-rock ('Hollywood Joe'). pop ('(Baby I Could Be) So Good At Loving You'), and conventional rock (a toughened-up cover of Hamilton Streetcar's 'I See I Am'). As a singer Clifford didn't have the most dynamic voice you've ever heard, but his voice was versatile and made the most of his chops. - badcatrecords.com

Howdy Moon - Howdy Moon (1974 A&M Records)

Album: Howdy Moon
Label: A&M Records

Format: Vinyl, LP, Promo
Country: US
Released: 1974
Genre: Pop/Rock, Folk, World, & Country
Duration: 00:32:42

•  Containing the Valerie Carter-penned "Cook With Honey" (which was a minor hit for Judy Collins), Howdy Moon is a solid, if unremarkable, folk-rock album of the early '70s. Formed by friends Jon Lind, Richard Hovey, and Valerie Carter in Loginitas, CA, the group released one album before disbanding. Though it's a somewhat obscure album, most of Little Feat (along with John Sebastian and Van Dyke Parks) are featured players. Creative harmony arrangements and instrumental backing highlight such songs as "Cheyenne Autumn" and "Millstream." - Rob Caldwell

• This album was recorded in 1976 on RCA Victor Records and is out for the first time on CD. This album is a science fiction alternative country album backed up by Kris Kristofferson's back-up band at that time, plus other stars like Doug Dillard. John Hartford and Red Rhodes, who once went on the road with Hank Williams, playing pedal steel. "The Outsider" was one of Gene Clark of The Byrds, very favorite albums. It's also the album that got me fired from RCA because the executives there thought it was too weird. Me, Guy Clark and Steve Young all got dropped at the same time by the same executives. - www.tompacheco.com

Craig Doerge - Craig Doerge (1973 Columbia)

Artist: Craig Doerge
Album: Craig Doerge
Label: Columbia
Catalog#: KC 32179
Country: US
Released: 1973
Genre: AOR, Westcoast
Duration: 00:32:35

•  Craig Doerge (pronounced "Durgie") already had a good collection of credits as a session keyboard player when Columbia Records released his self-titled debut solo album in the summer of 1972. Then recently, he had appeared on Jackson Browne's self-titled debut solo album and on the first Graham Nash/David Crosby album, Graham Nash/David Crosby. He had also been a member of Rosebud, a group that included Judy Henske and Jerry Yester, which had made a self-titled album for Reprise Records the year before, after which Henske divorced Yester and took up with Doerge. The two collaborated on songs, Henske writing lyrics and Doerge music, and "Yellow Beach Umbrella" (later covered by Three Dog Night and Bette Midler) caught the ear of Columbia president Clive Davis, resulting in this album. As one might expect of an A-list session musician, the playing was impeccable, with such high-profile guests as Larry Carlton, Jim Keltner, Danny Kortchmar, Russ Kunkel, Leland Sklar, and David Spinozza sitting in. The estimable Peter Matz wrote orchestrations, and jazz greats Ray Brown and Harry "Sweets" Edison played on the closing track, "Raggedy Ann." Doerge's own keyboard work was typically impressive. He turned out to be a competent singer, but he had a relatively generic-sounding voice that seemed more suited to background singing than lead work. (It would have been interesting to hear what Henske, whose big voice is anything but generic, might have done with her own lyrics instead.) The songs were pleasant and entertaining, but not enough to establish Doerge in the singer/songwriter sweepstakes of 1972, where the bar had just been raised by Browne's emergence. Instead, after the album failed commercially, Doerge fell back on his considerable chops, forming the all-star session band the Section with Kortchmar, Kunkel, and Sklar, and backing more successful figures in the Los Angeles soft rock scene, such as James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Browne, and Crosby, Stills & Nash. (There are several pseudonyms among the background singer credits. "Wedge Majestic" is really David Lindley; "Lily Heart" is Henske; and, although it's not clear why, Doerge himself is credited as "Napoleon Smith.") - William Ruhlmann.
