•  As hyperkinetic blues albums by white English kids go, this is a good one. Dave Edmunds, armed only with a 1959 Gibson 335 and a 100-watt Marshall stack, cranks through these recognizable blues covers (with one original instrumental) with reckless abandon and gobs of technique. Backup support is handled by bassist John Williams and drummer Bob "Congo" Jones, who do their best to keep up and provide a rhythmic foundation for Edmunds to wail over. Edmunds also handled nearly all the vocals, and as blues singers go, he's merely serviceable, but what makes this album worthwhile is the revved-up guitar playing, especially when Edmunds shreds both Freddy King's "The Stumble" and Willie Dixon's "Wang Dang Doodle."

•  David LaFlamme (born May 4, 1941, in New Britain, Connecticut) is a virtuoso violinist in both classical and rock music. David's mother was from a Mormon family in Salt Lake City, and when he was eight years old, the family moved there to be near her family. David had already been studying music since moving to Los Angeles at the age of five, and eventually he became the violin soloist for the Utah Symphony Orchestra. After briefly serving in the U.S. Army, he returned to the music scene in San Francisco in 1962. During the 1960s he performed with a wide variety of notable San Francisco acts, such as Jerry Garcia and Janis Joplin. He first formed the band Electric Chamber Orkustra, and later, an early version of Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks. Then, in summer 1967, he formed It's a Beautiful Day. An eponymous LP was released by Columbia Records in 1969, containing their biggest hit, "White Bird". After a few more albums with It's a Beautiful Day, LaFlamme went on to work in other acts. He has appeared on the television shows Frasier, Ellen and Wings, as a strolling violinist who stands right at the table in a restaurant, playing loudly or annoyingly. (wiki)

•  Whitcomb’s single, “You Turn Me On” reached Billboard’s number 8 spot in July 1965. During his summer vacation in 1965, Whitcomb went to America to appear on such television programs as Shindig, Hollywood A Go-Go and American Bandstand. Whitcomb played the Hollywood Bowl with The Beach Boys in 1965 and then toured with The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, and Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs.
“N-Nervous!” Whitcomb’s next release, was recorded in Hollywood, California and reached Billboard’s Top 50. He returned to Dublin for his history finals and received a B.A. degree. In 1966 he turned to early popular song: his version of a 1916 comedy number, “Where Did Robinson Crusoe Go with Friday on Saturday Night?” was a West Coast hit, reviving the ukulele before the emergence of Tiny Tim.
After making four albums for Tower Records and producing Mae West on her album called Great Balls of Fire for MGM Records in 1972, Whitcomb returned to the UK where he began his writing career with After the Ball. He later wrote Tin Pan Alley, A Pictorial History (1919–1939) and a novel, Lotusland: A Story of Southern California. (Wiki)

Eddie Mottau - No Moulding (1977)

Title: No Moulding
Label: Neworld Media
Catalogue: NWS 050677
Released Date: 1977
Country: USA
Genre: Pop/Rock
Duration: 00:36:58

•  Boston-born guitarist Eddie Mottau has enjoyed a five-decade career that has carried him across a dozen or more crazes, waves, and other trends in music. From a boyhood interest in folk music, he formed a team with his friend Joe Hutchinson as Two Guys from Boston, who got to record a single for Scepter Records with Paul Stookey, of Peter, Paul & Mary, as producer. The duo eventually became the psychedelic folk-rock band Bo Grumpus, who relocated to New York to be recorded by Felix Pappalardi. That group -- which for a time assumed the name Jolliver Arkansaw -- lasted until 1970.
Mottau returned to Paul Stookey's orbit, playing guitar and serving as co-producer of the latter's first post-Peter, Paul & Mary solo album, Paul And. That project led to his crossing paths with John Lennon, which resulted in his working with Lennon's live band, and to a gig playing with Lower East Side music rebel David Peel. Mottau recorded and released his first solo album, No Turning Around (MCA) -- produced by Stookey -- in 1973. And he was back working again with Lennon the following year, on Walls and Bridges, and again in 1975 on Rock 'n' Roll. Another solo album, No Moulding, followed in 1977. Mottau continues to play and record, but out of New Hampshire -- where he has lived since the 1980s -- rather than New York City. - Bruce Eder

Pacheco & Alexander - Tom Pacheco and Sharon Alexander (1971)

Artist: Pacheco & Alexander
Album: Tom Pacheco & Sharon Alexander
Label: CBS, Columbia
Catalog#: C 30509
Released: 1971
Country: US
Genre: Pop/Rock, Folk Rock
Duration: 00:38:48

•  When Tom Pacheco's group Euphoria dissolved, Sharon and Tom worked as a duo for a time, mostly around Greenwich Village. While performing at The Gaslight they were approached by an A&R man from CBS who arranged for them to audition for then label head, Clive Davis.
A few weeks later, the pair walked out of New York's CBS building with a record deal. Pacheco & Alexander 1971, a twelve-track collection of songs penned by Tom, was produced by John Hall. By this stage, Hall had already recorded his first solo album, which had included three of Tom's songs. The Pacheco & Alexander liner credits the songs to Pacheco, while the disc states Pacheco/Alexander. The liner is correct. Tom and Sharon's album was not a commercial success and the pair drifted apart. (James Oglethorp)

Gary Lewis & The Playboys - Listen (1967)

Artist: Gary Lewis & The Playboys
Album: Listen!
Label: Liberty Records
Catalog#: LRP-3524
Format: Vinyl, LP, Album, Mono
Country: US
Released: 1967
Genre: Rock , Pop Rock
Duration: 00:30:45

•  Gary Lewis was one of the very few American pop stars who was drafted and served in the military during the Vietnam War, and the slightly goofy but well-crafted pop/rock records that were his stock in trade were rapidly going out of style as Lewis entered the service in 1967. Listen!, recorded while Lewis was on leave, was intended to serve two purposes: to keep him in the public eye while he was overseas, and to update his sound and approach as psychedelia and heavy rock where becoming the dominant sounds in rock & roll. Listen! is a long way from psychedelia, but it's significantly artier and more ambitious than "This Diamond Ring," "She's Just My Style," or any of Lewis' other hits; "Happiness" is largely cut from the same cloth, but the Phil Spector-esque production was clearly on the grand side for Lewis. Producer Gary Klein selected some excellent material for Lewis, including two Tim Hardin numbers ("Reason to Believe" and "Don't Make Promises"), John Sebastian's "Six O'Clock," and three tunes by Alan Gordon and Garry Bonner of the Magicians (one of which, "She'd Rather Be with Me," was recorded around the same time by the Turtles and became a hit). Jack Nitzsche arranged the sessions (with session musicians taking the place of the Playboys), and he transforms these songs into stylish pop that's sophisticated, engaging, and more forward-thinking than anyone might have expected from a Gary Lewis album. And while no one ever described Lewis as one of the great singers of his generation, Klein and Nitzsche clearly worked with him on Listen!, and he sounds sure and confident on this album; the material doesn't stretch his range, but the where he often sounded clumsy on his hits, he approaches this material with aplomb. Listen! is something less than a lost classic, but for a guy who was never considered to be an artist of lasting importance, it shows that given the right material and careful nurturing, he had it in him to make a worthwhile album. - Mark Deming

Style - S/t (1988 RAzz-a-MAtazz Records)

Label: RAzz-a-MAtazz Records
Catalog#: 8X563
Format: Vinyl, LP, Album
Country: US
Released: 1988
Genre: Rock
Duration: 00:40:53

Thomas Woods.

For too long the Style album has languished in obscurity, unknown to even some of the hardest soul and funk collectors around the world. Certainly the most obscenely rare soul album out of Indianapolis, Style was one of the most popular soul groups in the early 80s. It's membership included Jerry Brown, Katharine Carter, Donald Daily, William Drane, Terry Moncrief, Diane White and Thomas Woods.
Both Thomas Woods and William Drane were original founding members of Soul Relation Show Band that recorded on John Footman's obscure "Beetle" imprint their incredible "Mongo Strut" way back in 1972. They later shortened their name to SRB and eventually morphed into Style. According to Woods the reason for this was that the world "soul" was considered a bit old-fashioned to have in your name by the late 70s.
Rumor has it that producer Jim Horton (who also produced Fabulous Souls - Take Me) threw away a small garage unit filled with this album sometime in the earls 2000s and a couple hundred were accidentally burned by the guitarist Woods. It's really too bad because it's an album whose time is yet to come. You won't likely find one soon, but it's worth picking up if you stumble across one.
The album itself is a strong mixture of mid-tempo soul cuts and ballads with great singing. True, the material's arrangements and instrumentations are dated by the synthesizer sounds, but it only makes the material more memorable and more exciting to listen to. It's hard for me to forget that Woods informed me that his SRB band was heavily influenced by George Clinton's Parliament and the rock-oriented soul/funk arrangements shine through.
Several years ago I was lucky enough to stumble across one of the Style test pressings in a collection in Indianapolis. The guy who had it thought for some reason that the record was never issued. Indeed, the original proved to be as elusive to find as the test pressing. Both the original gold cover and the test pressing are shown in the photos above.

The Archers - Fresh Surrender (1977)

Artist: The Archers
Album: Fresh Surrender
Label: Light Records
(Sheridan Square Entertainment)
Catalog#: LSB-5707
Released: 1977
Country: US
Genre: Christian rock
Duration: 00:38:33

•  The Archers were one of America's earliest Contemporary Christian music groups. They were originally brothers Tim and Steve Archer, Nancye Short and Billy Rush Masters. After Masters and Short departed in 1977, sister Janice Archer joined. They enjoyed greater longevity than most of the pioneering CCM artists, recording chart hits in the decades of the 1970s, '80s, and '90s. Their hits included, "Jesus Is The Answer", "Little Flowers", "It Wouldn't Be Enough", "Fresh Surrender", "Stand Up!", and "Heaven In Your Eyes". Former Maranatha! Music artist and CCM pioneer Erick Nelson defined The Archers' role in the development of contemporary Christian music as representing one-half of a convergence: traditional vocal groups like The Archers got hipper while the hippie rock groups (like the Maranatha bands) got more mellow—eventually both evinced the polished, commercial sound that would be identified as stereotypical contemporary Christian music.
Fresh Surrender was The Archers fourth studio album and third Light Records release. It and its title song were nominated for a Gospel Music Association (GMA) Dove Award, and claimed an astounding seven airplay hits for the Jesus music stars. Perhaps more importantly it signaled a marked change for the band, both in sound and appearance. It was recorded on the departure of two founding-members, Billy Rush Masters and Nancye Short-Tsapralis who had been linchpins in the creation of the group’s sound and writing team for six years. Now a trio with sister, Janice Archer, who had been traveling with the combo for some time, The Archers took off in a new direction that would define them for the rest of their career. The project was arranged by Elvis Presley's original TCB Band keyboardist, Larry Muhoberac who went on to co-produce The Archers' next album, Stand Up! also released by Light Records. Once again, the band was joined in the studio by an elite group of Los Angeles recording musicians, including Steely Dan alumni Ben Benay, Dean Parks, Lee Ritenour, Wilton Felder, David Hungate, Mike Baird, and Jim Keltner.
