Act - September Field (1985)

Artist: Act
Album: September Field
Label: EMI / Odeon Records
Catalog#: 062 1374841
Format: Vinyl, LP, Album
Country: Oslo, Norway
Released: 1985
Genre: Rock, New wave, Power pop
Duration: 00:38:44

Wham Bam! The Act.
R.E.M., The Cramps, The Fleshtones, The Go-Go's, Wall of Voodoo, The Alarm, The Lords of the New Church и др.
The Textones.

The Act formed under the name Wham Bam! in February 1983, after Bjorn Kulseth (b. 1962) had moved to the capital Oslo and advertised in the music paper Nye Takter for other players into late 1970s new wave and classic 1960s pop and rock.
Kulseth and Rune Krogseth (b. 1963) both sang lead and backing vocals, played guitars and wrote songs. Bass player Trond Ihlen (b. 1956) and drummer Dag Bogeberg (b. 1957) had been kicking around the Oslo music scene since the mid-1970s. Both had been in the band Jydske Rev (one album; Nyt det in 1981) though not at the same time.
Wham Bam! quickly become a popular live act, playing both original songs and covers of artists like Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, The Blasters, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Smokey Robinson etc. To avoid associations with the new UK teenybop duo Wham!, the band name was altered to The Act in November 1983.
After playing the Oslo club Ratz in January 1984, The Act took on keyboards and guitar player Stein Ramberg (b. 1961) as an associated member. Ramberg was a veteran of bands like Kollaps, Front Page, Saturday Cowboys and Ghostriders.
By both headlining shows around the country and supporting likeminded, visiting bands like Green on Red and R.E.M., The Act built a reputation as an exiting new live band. In December 1984 they were voted "Best Unsigned Band" in the annual readers poll in the music paper Nye Takter. Wannskr?k, soon to become DumDum Boys, came in fourth. - en.wikipedia.org

Pollution - I (1971 Prophesy Records)

Artist: Pollution
Album: Pollution I
Label: Prophesy Records
Catalog#: SD 6051
Format: Vinyl, LP, Unipak Gatefold
Country: US
Released: 1971
Genre: Funk / Soul, Rock
Duration: 00:38:21

Pollution was the brainchild of guitarist and songwriter James Quill Smith (aka Smitty), who appears to have organized the band and wrote a good deal of the songs they recorded. With most of the rest of their material written by other members of the group. On Pollution I, the band consisted of Dobie Gray (Percussion & Vocals), Ronnie Barron (Piano), Terry Furlong (Guitar), Jerry Jumonville (Saxophone), Dennis Kenmore (Percussion & Background Vocals), John Lambert (Bass & Vocals), Richard Lewis (Trumpet, Keyboards & Background Vocals), Christiaan Mostert (Flute, Keyboards, Saxophone & Background Vocals), James Quill Smith (Guitar, Harmonica & Vocals), Tata Vega (Percussion & Vocals), and Mike Reiley (Background Vocals). The lineup changed somewhat for Pollution II, most notably Dobie Gray was absent, but I don't have the full lineup for that one.
The band was managed by Max Baer Jr., son of the onetime World Heavyweight champion and the actor who played Jethro on the Beverly Hillbillies. This didn't appear to help their career as much as one might expect since, by all accounts, he was a lousy manager. He did better as a movie producer having put out some profitable gems like Macon County Line & Ode to Billie Joe.
James Quill Smith still performs and has a recent CD. Vocalists Dobie Gray (who appears on the 1st but not the 2nd of these) and Tata Vega (who appears on both) both went on to productive careers that continue to this day, and at least some of the other band members are still playing music as well. Pianist Ronnie Barron, in addition to his musical efforts, also went on to play the sleazy bartender in Steven Seagal's Above the Law.
Prophesy Records, which issued both of these albumes, was distributed by Atlantic that only had a few releases including a couple Kraut rock bands, a Clifton Chenier album & Quincy Jones' soundtrack for The Hot Rock--odd selection to say the least.

David Paton - Fellow man (2007 DPS 005)

Duration: 00:41:37

Just a lew words on 'Fellow man'. I set off for Australia in August 2007 for a series of concerts. I took with me a working title for the album, a few notes on final lyrics and a rough idea of the running order. While in Sydney I met with Andrew Hogarth who took me to meet Uncle Max Eulo at a ceremony in St Mary's Cathedral. When I was introduced to Uncle Max his words to me were 'You've come a long way', these are the opening lines to 'Fellow man' and I realised then that I had a title for the album. Other song titles: 'I want' sounds selfish but has a lyric many of us would agree with, in an ideal world all of us would be surrounded by lots and lots of love. A song that came about thanks to a piece of software called Atmosphere is 'I've been here before' it's not as sinister as it sounds and more to do with drinking too much alcohol. 'You and I' the lyric was finished in Australia and was the final song recorded for this album. 'You' is a birthday song for Mary completed on the 21st of June. 'Give me a sign' written in Spain 2005 and included on the David Paton and friends CD. 'Fellow man' it's all in the lyric and I always wanted to write a song about this subject, it's not all doom and gloom, we do live on a beautiful planet. 'Crazy' I don't believe in trying to impress others with exaggerated statements, better to just tell it like it is. 'Heaven' is dedicated to Cousin Evelyn, sadly no longer with us. It's no secret, I'm a big Prince fan and 'I'm gonna make you happy' shows how much I like his music. 'Across the Oceans' this is a song about travelling and feeling lucky to see so much of the world and other cultures.l enjoy quality as opposed to quantity and try to achieve the best quality in my music and playing without over polishing everything, spontaneity and the flash of inspiration can be lost with a clinical approach. I've worked with people who spend days on getting 'the right snare drum sound', not for me, the right sound and playing the right part is important, but if it's not there within 15 minutes, I'll move on. Many songs were considered and rejected for this album, some of them might evolve and be used at a later time, for now, I'm happy to release this collection as my album for 2007.1 hope that it is enjoyed for what it is. - David Paton

Keith Hampshire (born November 23, 1945 in Dulwich, London) is an English-born popular singer of the 1970s, famous in Canada for three top ten hits (including his #1 version of "The First Cut Is The Deepest", which topped the RPM 100 national singles chart on May 12, 1973), and the successful television show Music Machine. Though his voice resembles David Clayton-Thomas', Hampshire was not as successful in the United States, where his highest single only reached number 51. Between July 1966 and mid-August 1967, he was a DJ for Radio Caroline South on 259 metres, medium wave (1187kHz AM). His show was called "Keefers Commotions", and later "Keefers Uprising". In 1983, Hampshire released a song (as 'Bat Boys') entitled "OK Blue Jays", which became an anthem for the Toronto Blue Jays Major League Baseball team. Blue Jays fans sing it during the seventh-inning stretch of home games. The song was written by Alan Smith, Pat Arbour, Jack Lenz and Tony Kosinec. The song was remixed by Rob Wells and Chris Anderson of Big Honkin' Spaceship Inc. in 2003, and still plays during the seventh-inning stretch. On June 18, 2005 Hampshire was hired by Darren Stevens (comedian) to host a 60's-70's based oldies radio show on CHAY-FM in Barrie, Ontario. (en.wiki)

Jake Jacobs makes music that conveys a genuine sense of friendliness without being smarmy or simplistic. He is a personification of a particularly magical time in the musical spirit of New York City.
Jake's recordings (all of which are highly recommended) have been too rare - two LPs by the duo Bunky & Jake in '69 and '70, and two with his band the Family Jewels in '70 and '72. Since then he has only recorded a single with a later edition of the Family Jewels for NRBQ's Red Rooster label in '83,and an album of children's music with Bunky in '93.
With his new album, A Lick And A Promise, we now have a wonderful new recording of his music, a balm of good wishes for the soul that comes at a time when a chitinous shell of ignorance and zealotry has hardened and distorted the ties that bind the human family.
This doesn't mean that the music here is sugar coated. "Just A Stone's Throw" is an achingly accurate portrait of how so many good people are now just a stone's throw from the street, with music that is gently anthemic rather than dirge-like, making it even more poignant as a result. Wishful reverie marks the equally poignant "Locked Inside The City", with its bittersweet poetry and beautiful string arrangement.
The music hearkens to other sensibilities as well. "Stay In Shape" has an upbeat energy that befits its title while its lyrics name check Muhammad Ali and Dr. J. "For No One But The Moon" pays tribute to street corner a cappella singing in fitting fashion, while "Dusty" honors the queen of blue eyed soul without stooping to musical pastiche. "Annabelle" and "Kinky Afternoon" are the type of character vignettes that Jake does so well, and "Long Lost Friend" lovingly recounts a reunion. The album closes with "Lullaby of the Train", an evocation of the sweet mystery and wonder of that iconic image by a reunited duet of Bunky and Jake. This is easily one of my favorite albums of the year. - Josh Norton
